Indigenous leaders in Brazil claim that the government is failing to protect their communities as the country’s COVID-19 death toll surpasses 50,000 this week. The virus is disproportionately affecting the country’s indigenous population of 900,000 people–“killing chiefs, elders, and traditional healers.” In addition to the increasing toll of human lives, there are fears that this pandemic may cause irreparable damage to generations worth of culture and tribal history.
