As deaths and infections soar in Latin America, efforts to limit the spread of the virus have been weakened by continued corruption with dozens of public officials discovered to be exploiting the crisis for financial gain. Necessary medical supplies–including face masks, ventilators, and hand sanitizer–have been price-gouged. Additionally, much of the equipment sold has been rendered useless, contributing to higher death rates and an increased spread of the virus.
