The U.S. is home to a largely fragmented healthcare system in which the delivery of health services is often separate from the public health sector. The public health system, which targets issues such as clean air and sanitation, often works in the "background", ensuring the overall health of a population. However, public health is not attributed nearly as much attention or funding as merited, especially in comparison to medical care.
