Racial disparities in the U.S. and COVID-19

The U.S. is home to stark and shocking racial disparities in healthcare.

Particularly, communities of color suffer disproportionately. African-Americans are subject to some of the worst health outcomes when it comes to chronic and pre-existing conditions, such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

When it comes to pregnancy, vast research has documented the stark disparities in maternal and infant mortality for African-American women. Disparities in pre-existing conditions and other pregnancy complications are highly believed to be caused by chronic stress and social/healthcare disadvantages.

Long-term research on COVID-19 still limited and not quite available. But preliminary accounts and findings seem to suggest that COVID-19 is yet more another outlet through which deeply-rooted, structural, discriminatory inequities towards African-Americans may manifest themselves.
