Women as Essential Workers

About 52% of individuals deemed "essential workers" are women, with fields such as social work and healthcare heavily dominated by women. 90% of nursing-related positions are held by women. The vast majority of grocery store clerks, more than two-thirds, are women. More than 80% of positions related to home and personal care aides are occupied by women. This is in contrast to male-dominated lines of work such as carpentry and construction which are largely deemed non-essential during the pandemic. While several essential fields, such as law enforcement and public utilities, are indeed male-dominated, the female-dominated health care field is by far the largest, most strained and most demanding field during the current crisis.
